Quick Tip: How to Decorate a Cake on Short Notice

Okay, so maybe these kinds of things only happen to me (probably not), but I completely forgot about my father-in-law's birthday last month! Oops. It somehow slipped my mind that he and my husband had planned an evening to have dinner, cake, and ice cream together.

Luckily, I have people over pretty often, so I usually keep boxed cake mixes in my cupboard for these types of situations. I whipped up a yellow cake with a bit of Jell-0 pistachio pudding mixed in (my father-in-law loves pistachio), and threw it in the oven. After it cooled, I iced it, and then I realized...uh oh...I didn't have any icing to write with!

I didn't have time to go to the store, so this was what I came up with...

Hey, not bad for last minute, huh? I thought it turned out pretty well considering the tools I used. All I did was roll up a bit of parchment paper, melt down a few chocolate chips, and pour the melted chocolate in the parchment cone. Once I snipped the tip off, I had a perfect little decorating tool.

Aw isn't it cute? I love how random the little squiggles at the bottom turned out. There's just something about the "slightly off" that occurs when doing things by hand. I love it!

The guys loved it, too ;-). I hope you found this quick tip helpful! I'm always happy to pick up a new trick in the kitchen from someone else. Anything that helps make my life easier sounds great to me!

That is a great idea! I do not decorate cakes enough to buy all the tools, so I will try this in a couple of weeks when it is Mr. Genius' bday!

Thanks for sharing. What a great idea. I hate buying those decorating tubes because I don't use them that often. Now I can use chocolate instead of all that artifical color. The cake looks beautiful.

Oh thanks, Theresa! Yeah, I like avoiding artificial color, preservatives, additives, and all that other yucky stuff when I can too. Another good idea is using white chocolate writing on a chocolate cake. I bet that would be pretty, huh? :-) Thanks for the loving comment/compliment.
